I have been using Linux for 3 years now, and I love using it. It just works perfectly fine for me for all my daily tasks and has no issues so far.

So, What is Linux, you say ?

Linux is a kernel (a bridge between your hardware and software), but more regarded as an Operating System (OS), unlike Microsoft Windows or Apple macOS, created and released by Linus Torvalds in 1991.

OS is the smart brain of a computer. It’s a system software, which handles other software programs you use on a daily basis, by providing the right amount of hardware resources. We now can’t imagine our computers without an operating system. Otherwise, to run even a note-taking application on a computer, you need to program it from scratch to use it, and it might not even work on the other computer which you use. For that, you need to program it again. So thanks to the OS which manages all this processes for us and makes our works efficient and to the point.

Why Linux ?

So, why Linux you say ? Why not use Windows or macOS for your work ?

Firstly, Linux is free, completely FREE ! Download it, install it, and you are good to go, no money, no activation key required.

Linux is an open-source operating system, which means that you can view and even edit the full source code of the operating system.

Second, there are a ton of Linux distributions available for everyone to use. From an average computer user, to a master hacker, to a gamer, there are different distributions for all of you. Have a look.

Distributions are like the flavors of Linux. Mostly used ones are Ubuntu, for an average user, then there’s Kali Linux, for a pentester or simply a hacker.

For an average computer user, Ubuntu or Manjaro Linux are the best ones for you. You can try it by even booting from a USB stick.

Third, you have all control on every process of your OS. Customization is to the fullest in Linux. You can configure whatever you see. You can change themes, create your own, stop or remove any software, update whenever YOU WANT TO !

Almost all Windows and macOS applications are available for Linux, and there are alternatives if you didn’t find your software for your Linux distro. For example, Adobe doesn’t offer their media softwares for Linux. But you have better alternatives like Blender (Video Editor and Animation), GIMP (alternative to Photoshop)and DaVinci Resolve (alternative to Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro)

You can even run your Windows applications on Linux via Wine. Almost most of the Windows apps run perfectly fine without any issues. Run games via Steam (also available for Linux).

How many computers even use Linux ?

Umm, talking about Desktop computers, only 2% use Linux as their primary OS. but if you take servers, almost 97% of world’s all servers use Linux

Talking about top 500 supercomputers in the world, all of them, 100% of them use Linux

Linux is perfect for handling all kind of tasks, and it is lightweight and easy to use (couple of exceptions)

Fun fact, even your toaster is using Linux

Conclusion

I find Linux better alternative to Windows and macOS and you should try it once. You won’t regret it. Go and search for tutorials on the Web to get started
